About the event
Welcome to Pint of View – Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
This July, we're celebrating the centenary of one of the most influential equations ever written.
Exactly a hundred years ago, Erwin Schrödinger wrote an equation that transformed our understanding of the universe. It became the foundation of quantum mechanics, revealing a microscopic world where particles behave in astonishing ways, certainty gives way to probability, and the deeper we look, the stranger nature becomes.
A century later, Schrödinger's equation continues to shape the frontiers of science, driving breakthroughs in quantum computing, secure communication, and our understanding of the universe itself.
About the Lecture
The world of microscopic objects, of which our universe is made, is a mysterious one. Here, objects can occupy multiple states at the same time, entangled particles can influence each other across vast distances, and observation itself seems to shape what we measure.
This special centenary lecture will take you through the fascinating world of quantum physics, exploring ideas that continue to redefine science and power technologies such as quantum computers and secure communication systems.
No math needed. No prior knowledge needed either. Come prepared for a lot of demonstrations and a surprise origami act to close the lecture with.
About the Speaker
Professor Krishna Thyagarajan is a physicist, author, and science educator whose career spans more than four decades, primarily as a former professor of Physics at IIT Delhi. His research has been primarily focussed in the areas of optical fibre communication and quantum physics. He is the author of more than ten internationally acclaimed textbooks, over 175 research papers, and has created 73 nationally acclaimed physics education videos on quantum electronics and electromagnetism accessible to students across India. He has held visiting scientist positions at leading institutions in the United States, France, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Poland.
In 2003, he was decorated with the title of "Officier dans l'ordre des Palmes Académiques" by the French Government, one of France's highest honours for contributions to education and culture, and has received recognition from the governments of India and the United States as well as major industrial organisations. His most recent book, Integrated Quantum Photonics (Springer, 2025), is the first unified textbook in the field.
Apart from science, he is also interested in philosophy and arts. His hobbies include reading nonfiction science books on topics such as the intelligence of plants and animals, the history of mathematics, the connections between brain, mind and consciousness, and practising the art of origami folding.
