About the event
A little context first:
From the Roman Empire to the Mongol Empire and the British Empire, history is full of powerful empires that eventually lost their dominance. But is their decline inevitable, driven by the very forces that make them powerful, or could better decisions have kept them alive?
Side A: Empires collapse under the weight of their own success
Expansion creates overextended borders, expensive armies, administrative complexity, and dependence on continued conquest or extraction. As empires grow, the cost of maintaining control can outpace the benefits. The very power that makes them dominant plants the seeds of their decline.
Side B: Empires fall because they fail to adapt
Decline isn't inevitable. Empires weaken when leaders make poor decisions, institutions become rigid, or rivals adapt faster. Some survive major crises through reform, decentralisation, or technological change. Their downfall isn't simply the price of power it's the price of failing to evolve.
Pointers we might touch upon:
- Borders and armies
- Taxes and treasury
- Trade routes
- Succession
- Local rebellions
- Currency and inflation
- Religion and legitimacy
- Colonies and extraction
- Rising rivals

Thinkers' Club is a space for people who are deep thinkers and enjoy reading and better conversations.
We started it because it’s surprisingly hard to find people who want to go beyond small talk, people who enjoy exploring ideas, challenging assumptions, and hearing perspectives different from their own.
We host debate and discussion sessions around topics spanning technology, AI, business, health, society, philosophy and human behavior and more..
No speakers or lectures. Just a small group who want to find their intellectual friend circle.
How to join: Register for the event below. Since we keep these discussions small, spots are limited.
P.S. Please only register if you're sure of attending!
