About the event
Welcome to Pint of View, Bangalore’s first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in relaxed spaces.
Why did MF Husain paint horses hundreds of times over six decades? And what does feminist art history have to do with the answer?
In this lecture, artist Namrata Arjun explores one of Indian modern art's most enduring questions through the lens of Linda Nochlin's groundbreaking essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?
The session moves from prehistoric cave paintings and Renaissance Europe to Husain's iconic horses, examining how institutions, power, and cultural influences shape artistic greatness.
Along the way, you'll encounter Picasso, Xu Beihong, the Ajanta frescoes, Gujarati folk traditions, and the Progressive Artists' Group, discovering how Husain's practice can be read as decolonial, regional, or something beyond both.
About the Speaker
Namrata Arjun is a painter with an MFA from Bard College, New York. Their practice reimagines memory and art history through autobiographical and neurodivergent perspectives. Their work has been exhibited at India Art Fair, Delhi Contemporary Art Week, and Dhi Contemporary, and they have collaborated with institutions including the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) and the Devi Art Foundation.
