Pint of View (Lecture #90): Why Are Animals Colourful?
Pint of View (Lecture #90): Why Are Animals Colourful?

About the event
Welcome to Pint of View β Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
About the Lecture
Nature is wildly variable. Some animals are extravagantly coloured, while others are drab. Some animals are bold and conspicuous, while others are shy and cryptic.
Are these differences an outcome of random evolutionary variation or are they functional strategies?
In this talk, Maria will describe how sex, danger and randomnesss explain variation in animal evolution. In doing so, we will think about why animals evolve and express the incredible colours and behaviours that they do, and why evolution is both functional and fickle.
About the Speaker
Maria Thaker is a Professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
Her lab takes an integrative and comparative approach to studying animal form and function. This involves exploring how ecological conditions and evolutionary history shape the morphology, behaviour, and physiology of animals. They explore questions like why lizards and frogs are so colourful, what animals should eat when they are stressed, and how do they cope with changes in climate.
Her lab is particularly interested in understanding the implications of environmental change, such as urbanisation and global warming. Her hope is that by studying animal responses to naturaland human-induced challenges in the wild, she will better understand who is resilient and who may need our help.
