Welcome to Pint of View β Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
Every week, we bring together curious minds to learn about everything from space exploration and evolutionary biology to public policy, history, and culture, all in the relaxed setting of a neighbourhood pub.
This week, we're delighted to host Rukmini S., journalist, author, Founder of Data For India, and one of India's foremost interpreters of public data.
About the Lecture
Whole Numbers and Half Truths: What Data Can and Cannot Tell Us About Modern India
India is one of the most measured countries in the world. We count people, jobs, incomes, votes, crimes, and consumption. Yet many of our strongest beliefs about the country are often based on incomplete or misunderstood data.
In this lecture, Rukmini S. explores what statistics can and cannot tell us about modern India. Drawing from her acclaimed book with the same title and her subsequent work with Data For India , she will unpack some of the country's most persistent myths and assumptions, revealing how data can challenge conventional wisdom about everything from urbanisation and inequality to demographics, crime, and the Indian middle class.
Through stories from years of field reporting and working with public datasets, this lecture offers a practical guide to understanding India through evidence rather than anecdotes, and to becoming a more critical consumer of numbers in everyday life.
About the Speaker
Rukmini S. is one of India's foremost data storytellers. She is the Founder and Director of Data For India, a platform dedicated to making Indian data more accessible and understandable through research-backed analysis and visualisation.
