About the Lecture
The Philosophy of Travel: What Happens to Us When We Leave Home
When we are static, our selves become part of the background. We become closely tied to our homes, our work, our routines and the identities we build around them.
Travel disrupts that familiarity. Away from the outlines of the known, we encounter people, places and circumstances that force us to recalibrate. It can make us see the world differently, but perhaps more importantly, it can make us see ourselves differently.
For Mohit Satyanand, some of his deepest learnings have come through travel: his first glimpse into the nature of religion as a schoolboy in the Himalayas, an acute understanding of his own relationship with risk and insecurity in a Youth Hostel in Venice in 1977, and an encounter with deprivation in Istanbul later that same summer.
Fifty years later, he continues to wander. In this lecture, Mohit invites us into the “bioscope” of his travels with himself, reflecting on what it means to move through unfamiliar places, what travel reveals about our selves and our companions, and how seeing other worlds can ultimately change the way we understand the country we call home.
About the Speaker
Mohit Satyanand studied Economics at the Delhi School of Economics before creating Crax, India’s first successful homegrown snack food brand. Today, he is the Chairman and Co-Founder of Teamwork Arts, the organisation behind the Jaipur Literature Festival, and Managing Partner at Magic Mountain Investments.
Yet, beyond his work, one passion has remained constant: travel. From backpacking across Europe in the 1970s to making a home in the Himalayas, Mohit has spent decades exploring the world, not to escape life, but to better understand it. Along the way, every journey has offered him a new perspective on the world, and on himself.
