Abar hobe: A Bijoya lunch
Abar hobe: A Bijoya lunch

About the event
I’m going home for Durga Puja, like every year. And every year I come back with the same familiar feeling: it went so fast. This year, I’ll probably come back with it again.
Every Dashami ends the same way. The dhaak slows down, Ma goes into the water, and someone always says it: asche bochor abar hobe. It will happen again.
Then comes the quiet after. You’re still doing Bijoya rounds, still hugging people, still being fed, but the cooking at home changes.
So this year, I thought I’d extend my Bijoya celebrations to all of you.
Abar Hobe is a Bijoya lunch at my table. Some of it is the celebration, some of it is the humble food that comes after. Panta bhaat with a bhorta platter. A cutlet with a sharp dip ground from green banana peel and mustard. Guava and star fruit tossed with bit noon and chilli, the way they were sold outside school gates and in busy markets, done my way. Porota with mangsho or dhokar dalna. And a dessert from my very first supper club, because abar hobe means it comes back.
The lunch has a surprise or two along the way. I’ll let you find them.
The full menu is in the photos section.
