About the event
Welcome to Pint of View β Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
Every week, we bring together curious minds to learn about everything from space exploration and evolutionary biology to public policy, history, and culture, all in the relaxed setting of a neighbourhood pub.
This is our 100th lecture and what better than hosting one of our most favourite topics? Read on.
Going extra-terrestrial with Space Bricks
One of humanity's most enduring dreams has been to venture beyond the womb of our birth - to leave Earth and set foot on other worlds. From the visions of the Yoga Vasistha to the imaginings of Jules Verne, to the concrete ambitions of today's space programmes - the dream of interplanetary habitation has persisted across cultures and centuries.
Central to this challenge is the question of long-term habitation on the Moon and Mars. The only viable path forward lies in in-situ resource utilisation: the ability to build using materials found at the destination itself. Across the world, technologies that exploit local regolith as a primary construction material are advancing rapidly, each representing a distinct approach to one of the most consequential engineering problems of our time.
This lecture examines the challenge of extraterrestrial habitation through the lens of a pioneering Indian innovation: space bricks. This talk will present the science underpinning the innovation, its current state of development, and its potential to contribute to humanity's next great leap: building a home beyond Earth.
About the Speaker
Dr. Aloke Kumar is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, where his research spans space technology and fluid mechanics. He completed his doctoral work at Purdue University, USA, and subsequently held the Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta.
In 2017, he made the choice to return to India, establishing his laboratory at IISc with a clear mission: to do world-class science on Indian soil.
He is the co-founder of QOSMIC, a deep-tech space technology startup incubated at IISc. When he is not in the laboratory, he can be found gazing at the night sky - an astronomer at heart, with a passion for astrophotography.
