THE SEDUCTION OF WEATHERED SURFACES
Patina As An Aesthetic Language In Contemporary Art
What do ripped jeans, an oxidised silver jhumka, and the restored walls of City Palace have in common?
Nothing—until you notice we’re drawn to all of them for the same reason.
There’s something in us that finds age and imperfection more beautiful than anything new or flawless. Once you notice this instinct, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. Think: antique furniture, vintage watches, non-plastered walls. This pull runs so deep that such effects are now recreated artificially and sold to us at a premium.
In Fine Arts, we have a word for this phenomenon: PATINA.
In this lecture, we’ll travel across cultures and centuries—from Buddhist ideas of impermanence to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, and the Indian aesthetic concept of doṣa. We’ll explore how philosophers and contemporary artists have understood that beauty does not always emerge from perfection, but in collaboration with time, nature and ritual.
About the speaker
Aashu Chawla is a sculptor, researcher and Assistant Professor at Rajasthan School of Arts. Her work explores the aesthetics of ageing through Patina —the weathering of materials over time. Blending art, philosophy and material practice, her research examines why we find beauty in rust, wear and imperfection, and what these changing surfaces reveal about our relationship with time, memory and decay.
