About the event
Pint of View is in Kolkata at last. πΊ
For months, Pint of View has been taking big ideas out of auditoriums and into pubs, creating a space where difficult questions, fascinating stories, and curious people can meet over a drink.
About the Lecture
In just three decades, what once belonged to science fiction has become science fact. Astronomers have discovered more than 6,000 planets orbiting stars beyond our Sun: lava worlds locked in eternal daylight, stormy gas giants with winds faster than a fighter jet, planets cloaked in glass-sand clouds, and teenage worlds shedding their atmospheres into space.
In this session,Saugata will take us across this vast and surprising exoplanet landscape, starting close to home with what our own solar system taught us about planet formation, moving on to how astronomers detect and study worlds they can never directly see, and how they decode the chemical fingerprints of distant atmospheres from faint starlight.
He'll close with where the next generation of telescopes may finally find another Earth, and perhaps even a bio-signature.
It's an evening where thought meets spirit, where the bar turns into a classroom, and the classroom feels like a conversation among friends.
About the Speaker
Saugata is a postdoctoral fellow working at the University of Texas in Austin. His research focuses on understanding what exo planets are made up of. Before moving to Austin, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed his PhD at University of Amsterdam.
He studied physics in Presidency University, Kolkata where he was introduced to astrophysics.
His research focuses on understanding the atmospheres and climates of extremely young transiting exoplanets to shed light on planet formation and early evolution.
Born and bred in Calcutta, a thorough Bengali: he is excited by everything, especially puffy-luchis and young exo-planet atmospheres!
