UNTIL I MET A GHOST
A filmmaker’s journey into the forgotten histories of Indian soliders of First World War
About the Lecture
What happens when a filmmaker encounters a landscape that suddenly reveals a history he didn’t know?
While visiting Ypres, filmmaker Sachin discovers that 1.4 million Indians served in World War I, thousands of miles from home. He begins tracing their stories through archives, letters, photographs, songs and other fragments left behind.
What begins as a search through distant records slowly becomes something more intimate. Across a century and thousands of miles, these anonymous lives begin to feel unexpectedly familiar.
Until I Met a Ghost follows Sachin’s journey through the fields of Flanders and the process of making In Flanders Fields — from digging through archives and following fragments to finding ways of bringing forgotten lives back into the landscape.
A lecture about World War I, memory, migration and the traces people leave behind long after they are gone.
About the Lecturer
Sachin is a filmmaker and research-based artist from Rajasthan, India. His practice is rooted in a long-term engagement with rural landscapes, oral histories and folklore. His work explores how landscapes are shaped by changing social, political and ecological conditions, and how histories and forms of knowledge remain embedded within them.
He holds an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Documentary Filmmaking from DocNomads and a Master’s in Culture and Media Studies from the Central University of Rajasthan.
His films include In Flanders Fields (Visions du Réel 2024) and Towards a Fragmented Anatomy (IDFA 2019). He is currently developing This Is Not a Wasteland, a long-term documentary project on Rajasthan’s Orans.
