About the event
Welcome to Pint of View – Bangalore's first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in pubs and bars.
Every week, we bring together curious minds to learn about everything from space exploration and evolutionary biology to public policy, history, and culture, all in the relaxed setting of a neighbourhood pub.
Why is the Universe So Big?
The 20th century ushered in two major paradigms of physics, quantum mechanics and special relativity, fundamentally transforming the way we understand the world. Much of modern physics is founded on welding these two principles together into a single language, called quantum field theory. Despite the numerous and far-reaching successes of this program, at its foundation it makes a surprising prediction: that the universe must be much smaller than a sub-atomic particle.
Known as the cosmological constant problem, it is the elephant in the room of modern physics. It is at the heart of what makes the dark energy of the universe mysterious, and has been dubbed "the worst prediction in theoretical physics". In this talk we will understand the problem, and discuss some proposed solutions.
About the Speaker
A large fraction of Nirmal Raj's time goes into fathoming the nature of dark matter, an invisible and mysterious substance that makes up five-sixths of the mass of the cosmos.
He teaches at the Centre for High Energy Physics at the Indian Institute of Science, and writes layperson articles at The Hindu and The Print. You'll often find him poring over cryptic crosswords, hiking up a hill, or penning alliterative poetry.
