About the event
Welcome to Pint of View, Bangalore’s first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in relaxed spaces.
We often think of biology as chemistry and mechanics as physics. But inside our bodies, the two are deeply intertwined. Every movement, wound, heartbeat and healing process involves cells responding to physical forces.
Finally, we have a lecture that covers body’s fundamental constituent: cells and puts a mechanical engineering lens to find how it constantly stretches, senses and adapts to the outside world. From injury recovery to healing to cancer research, our next lecturer’s research has widespread implications.
About the Lecture
What if the cells inside our bodies could sense, respond to and adapt to the physical forces around them?
Most biological processes rely on cellular movement and response — wounds close, muscles adapt, blood flows, and fractures heal. Cells constantly sense, process, and adapt to external physical stresses.
When these mechanisms fail, disease follows: cancer cells metastasize, lungs undergo fibrosis, and arteries build up plaque.
In this lecture, Professor Namrata Gundiah will explore the cellular world through the lens of a mechanical engineer. She will discuss how cells respond to mechanical forces, why these physical interactions matter, and how mechanics can help us understand, and potentially influence, health and disease outcomes.
From wound healing and tissue adaptation to cancer, fibrosis and cardiovascular disease, this is a look at the fascinating relationship between the mechanics of our bodies and the biology of our cells.
About the Speaker
Namrata Gundiah is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
Her research explores the interface between mechanics and biology across multiple length scales, from nonlinear tissue mechanics to cell–substrate interactions.
She earned her Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering, and joined IISc after completing postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco.
