About the event
There's a specific kind of hunger that only monsoon brings. Not the polite kind. The kind that makes you want something hot, fried, slightly messy - eaten standing up or spread on your couch, wrapped in paper, while rain hits the road beside you. Or it could just be the famous Bangalore weather.
I have not grown up eating Jhalmuri as such, ours is a very Muri makha at home kinda family, the bowl passed around the living room or even the bed, all of us sitting in a circle. Mocha'r chop, petani (onion fritters) or aloo’r chop if maa is feeling generous. Egg rolls were also made at home and we ate it mostly for dinner - different kind of satisfaction. Dumplings somewhere in the hills, broth poured steaming into a tiny cup.
Off The Street starts from those moments. Seven courses built around the food you eat standing up - but seated, and done with a little more intention.
Bengali instinct meets Asian technique. Mustard oil and sesame run quietly through everything. A mocha'r chop that feels exactly like it should. An egg roll that doesn't call itself an egg roll. A dumpling soup poured at the table. Slow braised pork over Gobindobhog crispy rice that has my vision written all over it. A burnt jaggery toffee that I took a little too far the first time and then realised that was actually the point. And a dessert - warm malpua, black sesame ice cream, burnt jaggery toffee - my most favourite course of the menu.
Off The Street is the most fun menu I’ve created so far. The menu with all details are in the photos section.
Three seatings in, here's what I know.
The table gets louder with every seating. Strangers arrive politely. By the time the dumpling soup is poured, they're leaning across the chair. Someone ate the mocha'r chop with their hands and said nothing for a full minute. That was enough.
The broth surprised me every single time. I was scared of it before the first seating. By the third, it was the course I was most proud of. Clear, deeply savoury, poured tableside around a little rice paper potli tied with a charred spring onion. Every table went quiet when it arrived.
The malpua came out of the pan and went straight to the plate because it waits for no one. Soft serve black sesame ice cream on top. Burnt jaggery toffee spread across the plates. Someone at the second seating said they'd dream about it. I believed them.
Three tables. Twenty-something guests. All strangers at the start. None by the end.
The menu is part of the photos section.
For only eggetarians (unfortunately, this menu will have eggs in some form):
If chicken is not your jam, veg dumpling in veg broth will be served.
In case you don’t eat pork, it will be replaced with oyster mushroom cooked in similar sauce so that you can enjoy the whole experience.
What you get when you book:
A surprise goodie bag - we'll let you find out what's inside when you arrive.
A recipe card from the menu - one dish, yours to take home and cook.
A takeaway from my kitchen to yours - something edible to carry with you when you leave.
And most importantly - a table full of warmth, chatter, and laughter. The food is the reason you come. The evening is why you'll remember it.
