About the event
Welcome to Pint of View, Bangalore’s first-ever community where classroom-styled lectures meet drinks in relaxed spaces.
We hear the word “diversity” all the time. But what does it really mean in nature? Is biodiversity simply the number of species in a place, or is there more to it?
For ecologists, this question has led to a much bigger one: why do some species coexist while others don’t? What makes them compete, cooperate or simply live alongside each other? And how do these relationships shape the communities around us?
In this lecture, Dr. Meghna Krishnadas will use plants as a model to explore these questions. She’ll look at species through their different traits, how they function, interact and respond to their environments, and what this means for the communities they form.
Understanding how species coexist also helps us understand what happens when their environments change. And with the world changing rapidly, that question is becoming important.
Meghna will also explore what global environmental change could mean for ecological communities and the future of biodiversity.
About the Speaker
Dr. Meghna Krishnadas is an ecologist and scientist at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), where she studies biodiversity, exploring when, where and why different species occur and how they coexist to form ecological communities.
A former medical doctor, she left the hospital halls for forest trails after becoming increasingly concerned about the alarming loss of biodiversity. Her journey from activist to scientist was driven by the belief that knowledge is essential to action, as well as by a growing sense of awe and wonder at the complexity of life around us.
She leads the Community and Functional Ecology (CaFE) Lab, where she and her team investigate biodiversity and species interactions in a rapidly changing world. Outside science and conservation, she enjoys reading, writing, fitness, good conversations and gastronomy, and hopes to one day farm a little of her own food.
