About the event
Welcome to Pint of View – Pune’s first-ever community where lectures meet drinks in a relaxed pub-style setting.
About the Lecture:
Every atom in your body has a story that began long before Earth existed.
The carbon in your cells, the oxygen you breathe, and the calcium in your bones were all forged inside stars that lived and died billions of years ago. In a very real sense, we are all made of star stuff.
But the massive stars responsible for creating these elements live very different lives from our Sun. They burn brighter, often live with companion stars, and end their lives in spectacular explosions that can create supernovae, black holes, and some of the most powerful events in the Universe.
In this lecture, we’ll explore the extraordinary lives and dramatic deaths of these cosmic giants—and discover why they are at the centre of one of the most exciting eras in modern astronomy. 🌌
About the Speaker:
Dr. Athira is a theoretical astrophysicist and lecturer at Columbia University, New York.
Her work involves simulating how stars live and die, as well as studying entire populations of stars across galaxies.
She uses these simulations to interpret observations from some of the world’s most advanced billion-dollar telescope facilities.
Her research focuses particularly on the powerhouses of the Universe: massive stars and their explosive deaths as supernovae.
Having lived in six countries, Dr. Athira has received competitive scholarships for her MSc and PhD studies, as well as prestigious research fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Spanish Government’s Ministry of Science.
A passionate science communicator, she was the international runner-up at FameLab, the world’s largest science communication competition, and has also been an invited TEDx speaker.
Beyond astrophysics, she enjoys studying ancient history, travelling to historical places, and practising Bharatanatyam.
