About the event
About the lecture:
The night sky looks peaceful. But hidden beneath the visible light is a Universe of extraordinary violence and energy.Black holes pulling in matter. Neutron stars spinning hundreds of times every second. Exploding stars forging the very elements that make life possible.
Vast clouds of gas heated to millions of degrees. None of this can be seen with our eyes. This lecture takes you into the invisible world of X-ray astronomy, revealing how astronomers use space telescopes to detect the high-energy Universe hidden beyond human vision.
Through breathtaking images, animations, and real observations, we'll uncover how these cosmic X-rays help us understand some of the most extreme objects and events in existence.
Along the way, we'll explore how stars are born, live, and die, how galaxies evolve over billions of years, and why studying these distant phenomena continues to reshape our understanding of the Universe—and even drives technologies that find applications here on Earth.By the end of the evening, you'll never look at the night sky in quite the same way again.
About the Speaker :
Dr. Sayantan Bhattacharya is an astrophysicist and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. He earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (USA), where he specialized in high-energy astrophysics and X-ray astronomy.
His research focuses on some of the most extreme objects in the Universe—including black holes, neutron stars, and X-ray binary systems—using observations from NASA and ISRO's flagship space telescopes. Through his work, he investigates how matter behaves under the most extreme conditions known to science.
Beyond research, Dr. Bhattacharya is passionate about science communication and enjoys making the wonders of the Universe accessible to wider audiences, inspiring curiosity about the cosmos and our place within it.
