The Theme for the Talk

Beyond the light our eyes can see lies a vast radio Universe, carrying signals from stars and galaxies far far away! Radio Astronomy has played a crucial role in some of the most remarkable discoveries in modern astronomy, and has also become a favourite tool of science fiction, from mysterious signals arriving across the cosmos to the search for extraterrestrial life. In this talk, we'll step into the world of some popular movies and science fiction, and use their stories to decode the real science behind them—exploring how astronomers "listen" to the distant Universe, uncover its hidden phenomena, and even image a black hole.

The Speaker

Dr Kshitij Bane comes from an engineering background and completed his PhD at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, where he developed a radio telescope for observing pulsars at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory near Bengaluru. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), working on the SPOTLIGHT project, which uses the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) near Pune to search for the mysterious Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).

Beyond research, Kshitij is actively involved in science communication and outreach. A photography enthusiast and movie lover, he enjoys exploring the intersection of science and the stories we tell through cinema.
