WHO RULES RAJASTHAN?
From Dynasties to Democracy: Caste, Power & Political Struggles in Rajasthan
About the Lecture
Rajasthan is often imagined through its forts, palaces, deserts and royal past. But beneath the postcard lies a complex story of power.
Who Rules Rajasthan? traces the state’s journey from the princely states of Rajputana and jagirdari to a fiercely contested electoral democracy. The lecture explores how feudal power adapted to democracy, and how caste, land, royal legacies, political parties, social movements and larger-than-life leaders shaped the state’s political identity.
From the kisan sabhas and praja mandals and the first elections of 1952 to Dalit and Adivasi assertion, caste struggles, the rise of the BJP and Congress rivalry, and the political battles of today, the conversation looks beyond election results to examine who truly holds influence.
Drawing on years of ground reportage and research, Dr Tabeenah Anjum brings alive the stories and contradictions behind Rajasthan’s politics.
