Grave of the Fireflies - Screening & Discussion
About the event
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
How do you hold on to your humanity when the world has lost its own?
War. Loss. Survival.
Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies is not a conventional war film. It is an intimate, devastating story of two siblings trying to survive in Japan during the final months of World War II.
Through Seita and Setsuko’s story, the film asks what happens to innocence in the face of suffering, and what it means to care for someone when you have so little left to give. After the screening, we’ll open the room for an unhurried discussion exploring questions such as:
- What does responsibility look like when you’re barely surviving yourself?
- How does war change the way we see innocence and childhood?
- Is survival enough, or does how we survive matter too?
- What does this story make us responsible for remembering?
No prior analysis is needed. Just curiosity and a willingness to engage.
