The Plan Sounds Like a Joke. People Are Showing Up Anyway.

A fake resignation party, bhajan clubbing and a music night inside a hospital: inside India’s unserious event scene.

In the past few months, hosts on Offlyn have put on a fake resignation party in Delhi, bhajan clubbing in Mumbai, a vada pav eating competition in Bengaluru and a music night inside a working hospital. These are unserious events: offline plans built around a joke, a twist or a ridiculous idea. And people are showing up.

Picture a Friday night in Delhi. The dress code is formals, but make them baddie-coded. There’s a punching bag near the DJ. Every guest is asked to take a Resignation Day Pledge. Nobody is actually quitting, and everyone is celebrating.

That’s the Fake Resignation Party, hosted by MitraMesh on Offlyn on October 23, and the listing calls it India’s first. It’s one of a growing list of events we’ve started calling unserious. Unserious doesn’t mean careless. It means the idea comes first, and nobody is there to impress anyone.

Here’s what that looks like right now.

Quit, but make it a party

Almost everyone with a job has rehearsed the perfect resignation in their head. The Fake Resignation Party hands you the stage for one night, with a DJ lineup, photo booths and a theme that tells you exactly what to wear. You get the fantasy and keep the salary.

It’s also the easiest icebreaker going. Everyone in the room has a story about the job they’d walk out of.

Old rituals, new rooms

Some of the best unserious events take something familiar and put it somewhere unexpected.

Bhajan Clubbing in Mumbai did it with devotion. On August 16, wave, colaba hosted Bhakti Beats at Nuvana in Colaba, blending traditional bhajans with contemporary beats. You already know what a bhajan is. You’re just curious what it sounds like with a bass line.

HOSPITA/ITY did it with a hospital. On August 22, Superhealthindia, LocalHostHQ and Addi ran a music night inside a working hospital in Koramangala, Bengaluru. The house rules were the interesting part: the music started after OPD hours, decibel limits were monitored all night, event floors stayed separate from clinical floors, emergency routes stayed open, and there was no alcohol, smoking or vapes. The night ran on kombucha and music. The listing described it as reimagining hospitality where it’s needed most.

Both worked because the twist came with care. The concept got people in the door, and the rules kept the room right.

Come hungry, leave legendary

Competitions are the oldest unserious format there is. On August 23, Mumbai Pav Co. and host Tanay held a Vada Pav Eating Competition at their Gandhi Bazaar store in Bengaluru, timed to World Vada Pav Day. The rules fit in one sentence: five minutes, unlimited vada pav, highest count wins. The winner got ₹10,000, a trophy and a spot in the store’s Hall of Fame for a year. Everyone else got a participation medal, and spectators were welcome.

A clear goal, a clear winner and an audience. You don’t need anything more.

Make something, swap something

Not every unserious event is loud. Two of the best gave strangers something to do with their hands.

At The Drunk Pottery Night on August 29, AM2PM’s pitch was simple: you, a lump of clay, a drink and a room of strangers who are about to stop being strangers. A ticket covered two servings of wine and a hand-built piece to take home. The host’s tagline: “Come make something fun. Leave with a community.”

At the Swap Party on September 6, Green Rituals turned a wardrobe clear-out into a night out at Concept 01 in Bengaluru. Guests brought pieces to swap, there was live t-shirt printing, a temporary tattoo bar and three DJs, and anyone who left empty-handed got into the next one free.

With your hands full, nobody has to perform. That’s why these two are where friendships start.
